Durand is on the Chippewa River in west-central Wisconsin about 15 miles from its confluence with the Mississippi River. Durand is home to 1,800 people and is the county seat of Pepin County, population 7,300. The county is named for Lake Pepin, a naturally occurring widening of the Mississippi on the Minnesota border and the birthplace of water skiing. Durand is on U.S. 10 about 20 miles from Menomonie, 30 miles from Eau Claire, and 70 miles from Minneapolis-St. Paul.
Durand is a traditional Midwest small town with a strong industrial base and schools, shops, and dining in the Chippewa Valley. Scenic drives offer easy access to outdoor opportunities including biking, fishing, and hiking.
Pepin County is the birthplace of author Laura Ingalls Wilder of “Little House on the Prairie.” Durand’s Old Courthouse Museum preserves Wisconsin’s last wood-framed courthouse. A brewpub, winery, cidery, many natural areas, and music festivals are among local attractions. And two campuses of the University of Wisconsin are just short drives away.
