Boise City is the seat of historic Cimarron County and the westernmost city in the Panhandle and the state. Boise City is about 100 miles from Raton, NM, and 125 miles from Amarillo, TX. Energy, ranching, and farming anchor the economy. Boise City is served by four U.S. highways and freight service from the BNSF Railway. The nearby Black Mesa is Oklahoma’s highest point and a national hiking attraction for the High Plains views and its dinosaur tracks and fossils.
Incorporated in 1825, Boise City is a thriving, tight-knit town. Explore its museum and visit the nearby autographs that Santa Fe Trail pioneers carved in rocks in the 1800’s. And the Santa Fe Daze festival can’t be missed!
Boise City has about 1,200 of the 2,300 residents of Cimmaron County, Oklahoma’s least populous. An off-course B-17 bomber dropped six live training bombs here on July 5, 1943, the only U.S. city bombed in World War II. (There were no injuries.) One is at the Cimmaron Heritage Center, which also features Dust Bowl history and a giant metal dinosaur.
